When Should You Schedule Your CISA Exam?

Guidance on choosing the optimal timing for scheduling your CISA exam based on your preparation level and personal circumstances.

One of the most common questions CISA candidates ask is: "When should I schedule my exam?" The answer depends on several factors, and getting the timing right can significantly impact your chances of success.

The Case for Scheduling Early

Many successful candidates recommend scheduling your exam before you feel completely ready. This might seem counterintuitive, but there are strong reasons for this approach:

  • Deadline Pressure: A fixed exam date creates urgency that prevents indefinite procrastination. Without a deadline, it is easy to keep pushing your study "one more week."
  • Parkinson's Law: Work expands to fill the time available. A defined exam date forces you to prioritize high-value study activities instead of endlessly reviewing material you already know.
  • Diminishing Returns: After a certain point, additional study produces marginal improvements. Most candidates reach peak readiness after three to four months of consistent study.

When You Are Ready

You are likely ready to sit for the exam when you meet these criteria:

  • You consistently score 75% or higher on practice exams covering all five domains.
  • You can explain the reasoning behind correct answers, not just identify them.
  • You understand the "ISACA mindset" and can think like an auditor when analyzing scenarios.
  • You have completed at least two full-length practice exams under timed conditions.

Choosing Your Exam Window

CISA exams are offered year-round at PSI testing centers. Consider these factors when selecting your date:

  • Work Schedule: Avoid scheduling during your busiest work periods (quarter-end, audit season, major project deadlines).
  • Personal Commitments: Account for vacations, family events, and other obligations that could disrupt your final weeks of preparation.
  • Day of the Week: Many candidates prefer scheduling on a Saturday or the start of a week, when they feel most rested and focused.
  • Time of Day: Choose a morning slot if you are a morning person, or an afternoon slot if you peak later in the day.

The Final Study Period

Plan to have a focused final review period of one to two weeks before your exam date. During this time:

  • Review your weakest domains based on practice exam results.
  • Focus on areas where you consistently make mistakes.
  • Take one final full-length practice exam no later than three days before the real exam.
  • Spend the last two days doing light review only, focusing on key terms and concepts.
  • Rest the evening before the exam. Last-minute cramming does more harm than good.

Rescheduling Considerations

PSI allows rescheduling up to 48 hours before your exam appointment without penalty. If you experience a significant life event or illness that disrupts your preparation, rescheduling is a better option than taking the exam unprepared. However, avoid rescheduling due to nervousness or a vague feeling of unreadiness; some anxiety before the exam is normal and even helpful.

The best time to schedule your exam is when you have a clear study plan, consistent practice scores above the passing threshold, and enough time for a focused final review. Trust your preparation and commit to a date.
