Using Process of Elimination for CISA Questions

Why Process of Elimination Works
The CISA exam uses a multiple-choice format with four answer options per question. The process of elimination (POE) is especially effective for this format because you do not need to identify the correct answer immediately. Instead, you work backward by removing answers you know are incorrect, which narrows your focus and improves accuracy. This approach is particularly valuable for scenario-based questions where the "best" answer may not be immediately obvious.
Applying POE to Different Question Types
Knowledge-Based Questions
For questions testing factual knowledge (definitions, standards, processes), use your domain knowledge to quickly eliminate options that contain incorrect statements. Even if you cannot recall the exact correct answer, recognizing inaccurate information in two or three options significantly narrows your choices. Focus on key terms in each option that either match or contradict what you know.
Scenario-Based Questions
For scenario questions, eliminate answers that do not address the specific situation described. Read the question stem carefully to understand the context, then remove options that would be appropriate in different circumstances but not the one presented. Also eliminate answers that skip necessary preliminary steps or address symptoms rather than root causes.
"Best Action" Questions
When asked what an IS auditor should do first or what the best course of action is, eliminate options that describe later steps in a logical sequence. For example, if one option says "recommend controls" and another says "assess current risks," the risk assessment logically precedes the control recommendation, making the latter a candidate for elimination if the question asks about the first step.
Red Flags That Signal Wrong Answers
- Options that place responsibility on the wrong role (e.g., the auditor implementing controls instead of recommending them)
- Options that suggest ignoring or bypassing established governance processes
- Options that are technically correct but not relevant to the specific question
- Options that describe actions an auditor lacks authority to perform
Building POE Speed
During practice sessions, time yourself as you apply POE to each question. With practice, you will develop the ability to quickly scan answer options and identify obvious eliminations within seconds. This speed is essential during the actual exam where time management is critical. Aim to eliminate at least one option within the first 15 seconds of reading the answer choices.
When POE Narrows to Two Options
When elimination leaves you with two plausible answers, look for subtle differences between them. Consider which one is more comprehensive, more aligned with risk management principles, or more focused on the auditor's role. If you still cannot decide, choose the answer that represents the more conservative, governance-oriented approach, as ISACA tends to favor answers that emphasize oversight, accountability, and systematic processes over reactive or technical fixes.
