Exam Day Preparation: Your CISA Checklist
A comprehensive checklist for CISA exam day covering logistics, what to bring, and strategies for peak performance.
Preparing for Exam Day
After months of studying, exam day is finally here. Your preparation the day before and morning of the exam can significantly impact your performance. This checklist ensures you arrive at the testing center confident, calm, and ready to demonstrate your knowledge.
The Day Before
- Confirm Your Appointment: Verify your exam date, time, and testing center location. Log into your PSI or Pearson VUE account to confirm all details are correct.
- Plan Your Route: Know exactly how to get to the testing center, including parking or public transportation options. Consider doing a practice drive if the location is unfamiliar.
- Prepare Your Documents: Lay out your valid government-issued photo identification. Check the testing vendor's ID requirements, as two forms of identification may be required.
- Light Review Only: The night before is not the time for intensive study. At most, review your summary notes or flashcards briefly. Cramming at this stage is more likely to increase anxiety than improve performance.
- Get Adequate Sleep: Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep. Cognitive performance depends heavily on rest, and a well-rested mind performs significantly better on complex reasoning tasks.
Exam Morning
- Eat a Balanced Meal: Have a nutritious breakfast that includes protein and complex carbohydrates to sustain your energy throughout the four-hour exam. Avoid excessive caffeine, which can increase anxiety and cause energy crashes.
- Dress in Layers: Testing center temperatures vary. Wearing layers allows you to adjust your comfort level without distraction.
- Arrive Early: Plan to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled exam time. This allows time for check-in procedures, storing personal items, and settling in without feeling rushed.
- Minimize Distractions: Turn off your phone and avoid checking work emails or messages. Your full focus should be on the exam.
At the Testing Center
- Check-In Process: Present your identification, sign the check-in form, and follow the proctor's instructions for storing personal belongings. You will not be allowed to bring phones, watches, bags, or study materials into the testing room.
- Get Comfortable: Adjust your chair, keyboard, and monitor before starting. You will spend four hours at this workstation.
- Use the Tutorial: Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the testing software interface during the tutorial period. This time does not count against your exam time.
During the Exam
- Read each question completely before looking at the answer choices.
- Mark uncertain questions for review rather than spending excessive time on them.
- Take brief mental breaks every 30 to 45 minutes to maintain focus.
- Monitor your pace against the checkpoints you planned.
After the Exam
You will receive a preliminary pass or fail result immediately after completing the exam. If you pass, official results and your certificate information will follow from ISACA. If you do not pass, review the score report to identify which domains need additional study and plan your retake strategy. Remember that many successful CISAs did not pass on their first attempt.
